Disorder and Coulomb interactions

I will present some new insights into the limits of validity of standard DLVO models of colloidal interactions in the cases where the charge distribution and the dielectric properties of the interacting bodies can be characterized by disordered distributions or disordered patchiness. The disorder can have various effects on Coulomb interactions depending on whether it is of a quenched or annealed variety, or anywhere in between for that matter, depending on the preparation methods of the macromolecular surfaces. The spatial extent of the disorder distribution as characterized by its correlation length also plays a significant role in the nature of Coulomb interactions between macromolecular surfaces. The disorder effects are varied and important and in the most drastic case disorder-driven Coulomb interactions can persist even in the case of no net charges on the bodies. Net charge is thus not always needed to have electrostatic interactions.
