Nanostructured hard protective coatings

Asst. Prof. Miha Čekada

Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana

Hard coatings are ceramic thin films, which are used for protection of tools against wear. They are deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD) at a thickness of a few micrometers. For decades there has been an ongoing development towards improved properties, such as enhanced hardness, toughness, chemical inertness, etc. Starting from the ubiquitous TiN coating, the standard way of development is to (partly) replace the existing elements, yielding for instance the (Ti,Al)N or Ti(C,N) coatings. However, it turns out that a far more promising way is to manipulate the coating microstructure rather than the chemical composition. Methods and examples will be shown how to deposit nanolayer and nanocomposite coatings, while keeping the overall average chemical composition unchanged.
