Quest for the Correct Ground State

Magnetic impurities and quantum dots are described by deceptively simple quantum impurity problems featuring a discrete localized level(impurity) embedded in a continuum of states (host). By discussing the problem of parallel double quantum dot system and the recent controversy regarding its ground state, I will give an overview of the theoretical tools used in this branch of physics: renormalization group techniques (NRG), anaytical solutions based on integrability (Bethe Ansatz), and simulations (continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo). I will show strong evidence that the ground state of the double dots is a singular Fermi liquid with anomalous low-temperature behaviour.
