Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are intriguing states of matter, which do not break lattice symmetry despite being entangled over long distances. Even though the QSL concept was proposed more than 40 years ago for geometrically frustrated spin lattices, such states are still rather scarce and poorly understood. Defects, which are intrinsically present in any QSL candidate material, in principle present another complication, since they may affect the fragile spin correlations established in QSLs. On the other hand, such defects can also be employed as local probes of the QSL states. We will present a couple of successful examples of such an approach on the quantum kagome lattice, a paradigm of geometrical frustration in two dimensions.
