(1,1) L-space knots

Abstract: I will describe a diagrammatic classification of (1,1) knots in S^3 and lens spaces that admit non-trivial L-space surgeries.  A corollary of the classification is that 1-bridge braids in these manifolds admit non-trivial L-space surgeries.  This is joint work with Sam Lewallen and Faramarz Vafaee.

A 2-dimensional approach to embedding 4-manifolds

Abstract: I will describe a way to exhibit an embedding of one 4-manifold with boundary inside another using branched covers of surfaces in the 4-ball.  These surfaces can be described and manipulated using diagrams of knots with bands (thanks to Swenton and Kearton-Kurlin).  I will use these to exhibit various embeddings of rational homology balls bounded by links of Wahl singularities, recovering some known results and also some new embeddings.
