Dynamics of Northern Hemisphere Teleconnection Patterns
Dr. Christian Franzke, British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, UK
An important feature of the mid-latitudinal atmospheric circulation is that its low-frequency variability (periods larger than 10 days) can be efficiently described by just a few large-scale teleconnection patterns. The two most pronounced teleconnection patterns are the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Pacific-North America pattern. These teleconnection patterns have a large impact on surface climate. While the teleconnection patterns exhibit variability on intraseasonal and interannual time scales, their intrinsic time scale is about 10 days. In my talk I will discuss the dynamical processes which lead to the growth and decay of Northern Hemisphere Teleconnection patterns.
