Spin density wave in a quantum point contact

A quantum point contact (QPC) is a narrow constriction between two wider electron reservoirs, and is the standard building block of sub-micrometre devices such as quantum dots and qubits. Electron correlations play an important role in the transport properties of QPCs, for example in the well known 0.7 anomaly in conductance, the full explanation of which has not yet been given. We performed numerical calculations that shed some light into the role correlations play in such systems. Namely, we show that a spin density wave forms in a QPC and its sliding motion under the influence of the source drain bias is the mechanism of electron transport at low temperatures.
