The development of the research of the Vison Mathematics group in Bologna is exposed, starting from the problem of adapting the notion of homotopy to a more practicable class of relations (metric homotopies), then going to size functions, which can now be seen as part of persistent homology, up to the recent nD persistence results. Some applications to image classification and retrieval are mentioned.
