The lecture will first introduce the European Space Agency (ESA) and its various programmes and then give examples for challenging space missions in the domains of space science, satellite communications, satellite navigation and earth observation. Many of the missions addressed have features and capabilities that had not been possible before. The key  technologies will be briefly addressed together with the associated innovative application.  Examples for missions presented are: Mars Express, Planck, Alphasat, Galileo, SMOS, Cryosat, Biomass.
