Alternative refrigeration technologies based on caloric effects in ferroic materials

Povzetek / Abstract:

Cooling, refrigeration and air-conditioning are crucial for modern society. Nowadays, the energy consumption required for cooling and air-conditioning is growing exponentially, but we are still using technology (vapour-compression technology) that is over a century old, relatively inefficient and still uses environmentally harmful refrigerants. In the last decade we have witnesses the development of alternative solid-state refrigeration technologies based on caloric effects in ferroic materials. These are magnetic (magnetocaloric), electrocaloric, elastocaloric and barocaloric refrigeration. They can be more efficient and environmentally friendlier, with no harmful, solid-state refrigerants.
