Poverty measurement in Ecuador has traditionally followed two approaches: one based on consumption and other based on basic needs. Despite the overall agreement about multidimensional nature of poverty, these approaches set aside this feature. Furthermore, they also have hidden an important tension within conceptualization and measurement of poverty: fuzzy vs. crispy nature of concept of poverty. In this context, we propose a modified version of the Totally Fuzzy Relative (TFR) index to characterize and to measure urban poverty in Ecuador. This index is compared to the traditional measurement approaches. Finally, potential determinants of the degree of membership of households to poor set are explored.
