Nobel prize in Physics 2019

Povzetek / Abstract:

The prize honours "contributions to our understanding of the evolution of the universe and Earth's place in the cosmos". James Peebles got half of the prize for his theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology, while Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz share it "for the discovery of an

exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star." Pre-history and subsequent evolution of these fields will be illustrated, where Peebles realised the roles of background radiation, structure formation, and chemical composition of the early Universe, while Mayor and Queloz started an avalanche with currently 4130 planets around 3070 stars, implying that every second star harbours a planet similar to Earth in size.
