Higgs boson discovery and property measurements
Prof. Ivica Puljak, FESB, University of Split, Croatia
In July 2012 scientists at CERN, from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, have announced the discovery of a new particle with the mass around 125 GeV. While the whole world was talking about the Higgs boson discovery, we were more cautious, saying that we’ll continue to work on new particle properties measurements, before we start to seriously speculate about the nature of the new particle. Since the discovery we first measured spin and parity, then couplings to other particles and various production mechanisms, followed by the precise mass measurements, constrains on the width and anomalous couplings etc. Somewhere in the process the Nobel Committee was convinced that enough evidence accumulated and have awarded the 2013 Nobel prize for physics to professors Higgs and Englert, "for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider”. In this seminar we will try to present all the excitements of the discovery, as well as the most recent results on the Higgs boson property measurements, with the full dataset of the Run I of the LHC.
