Bridging Borders or Widening Gaps? Dynamics of European Scientific Collaboration Networks

This study examines the evolution of dynamic co-authorship networks among European countries from 1990 to 2023, revealing stable and shifting collaboration clusters influenced by geographical, linguistic, and historical factors. Using Indirect Blockmodeling and Dynamic Stochastic Blockmodeling (DSBM) on bibliographic data from OpenAlex, the study reveals how clusters evolved during three pivotal periods: the advent of the Internet (1994–2003), EU enlargement (2004–2013), and the implementation of ERA (2014–2023). Key findings include persistent regional disparities despite policy interventions, with stronger intra-cluster collaboration but weakened inter-cluster links. Practical recommendations address linguistic diversity, geographic proximity, and policy design to foster more equitable European scientific collaboration.
