Galaxies at Two Extremes: From Gaia’s Milky Way to JWST’s Early Universe

Vesna Pirc Jevšenak
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, University of Ljubljana, Slovenija

The Gaia space observatory has transformed Galactic astronomy on a remarkable scale. By assembling an unprecedented catalogue of stars, it has opened a new window into the structure and evolution of the Milky Way. In the first part of this talk, I will highlight how Gaia’s high-precision measurements allow us to map the rotation curve of the Galactic disk and even reveal the dynamical imprint of a nearby spiral arm.

In the second part, we shift from our cosmic backyard to the distant Universe, which we can now study in remarkable detail thanks to the revolutionary James Webb Space Telescope. Using spectra of galaxies formed within the first few billion years after the Big Bang, we will examine how the mass–metallicity relation of galaxies evolves with redshift and discuss the insights this provides into the processes driving galaxy evolution across cosmic time.
