Prof. A. Filipčič (JSI & Univ. of Nova Gorica), 2020 Zois Prize Awardee: **Measurements of Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Rays at Pierre Auger Observatory **
Povzetek / Abstract: Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina measures air-showers of particles caused by cosmic rays with a Cherenkov surface detector array spanning an area of 3000 km2 and fluorescence detectors. Since 2008, the Observatory measured more than 200k cosmic rays with energies above 10^18 eV and published results on their properties, energy spectrum and their composition. The hard edge of the spectrum at 10^20 eV shows that cosmic rays are originating outside our galaxy, the distribution of their incoming directions is also not correlated with the distribution of the stars in the galaxy. An upgrade of the Observatory is ongoing (AugerPrime) to better identify the cosmic-ray particle content.
