Vincenzo Giuseppe Genova : Chain migration in tertiary education: a network approach University of Palermo

Educational mobility plays a role in the development of a country. Indeed, it implies an exchange of socioeconomic opportunities and expertise among countries. When these movements are not symmetric and the balance is negative for a particular region, socioeconomic problems can arise. An example of one-way migration is Italian student mobility, where students move from the South to the Center-North (30% in 2017). In this talk, we explore student mobility from Sicily towards universities in the mainland, invoking the paradigm of chain migration in demography. Studies on this topic are very few in the literature and are mainly based on qualitative methods. We developed data analysis tools at the verge of Network Theory to identify preferential mobility patterns starting from micro-data of a mobility network and applied these methods to reveal preferential patterns of mobility of Sicilian students. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time the concept of chain migration, within the frame of the network analysis, has been applied to study the Italian students’ mobility.

Ilaria Primerano: Analyzing Italian student mobility pathways: a network analysis approach University of Salerno

Understanding the determinants and the main patterns of students’ mobility flows has become increasingly important for the organization of tertiary education systems. Student mobility flows can be represented as a unipartite network, in which the nodes are territorial units, the links are defined by student exchanges between pairs of units and the number of students shared by the units represent the link weights. In this talk, we consider universities as units to investigate the flows in the transition from the first (bachelor) to the second (master) university level. To explore the structural patterns of Italian students’ mobility flows, individual data from the Italian National Student Archive on the cohorts of students enrolled at university in the academic years 2011–12 and 2014–15 are managed. The observed networks have been reduced to their skeleton by removing links that appear less important to highlight the relevant mobility pathways, while network centrality measures have been used to identify the universities playing a crucial role in sending and/or attracting students. Furthermore, the overall student mobility flows among geographical macro-areas are addressed by considering the student mobility profiles built according to the status of being a mover or a stayer at the bachelor’s and master’s degree levels.
