Assoc. Prof. Dr. Martin Fally (U Wien): How to retrieve the phase information of holographic gratings by far-field diffraction experiments

Microscopic techniques or diffraction experiments are typically the methods of choice to investigate the structure of (periodic) materials. Far field diffraction, however, unlike interferometry only yields information on the amplitudes while the phase information is lost ('phase problem' of diffraction). Usually it is believed that only particularly advanced techniques, which have been developed during the last two decades and are based on employing coherent sources, such as ptychography can provide the lost phase.
In this talk I will try to demonstrate that at least for simple periodic structures a full phase retrieval can be obtained without the need for complicated extra data collection schemes.
