A regular map is an embedded graph on a surface, such that the group of orientation-preserving automorphisms of the embedding acts regularly on arcs. Classification of regular maps on surfaces of a given genus is a major problem in the theory of highly symmetric maps, with applications in Riemann surfaces and other disciplines. In the talk we will explain the background and present samples of recent advances in this area of research, obtained in a joint work with M. Conder and T. Tucker.
