In this talk I will describe the goals and tools of Physics Education Research (PER) - an interdisciplinary field that combines the methods that physicists use to do physics with the questions posed by cognitive science. The result is an exploding area of study that has a potential to revolutionize the way students learn and instructors teach physics.  I will share a new approach to teaching physics -an  Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE) which is an example of how one can use PER findings to engage students in the learning of physics that mirrors the doing of physics and what results such approach might bring into your classroom.

Using ISLE in your classroom

In this short workshop the participants will work with ISLE-based curriculum materials to experience how this approach allows students construct and test new ideas. Specifically, we will focus on the postulates of kinetic molecular theory.
