The nicest possible homomorphisms

 Abstract:  Numerous automatic continuity results have been proved during the last decade.  I will give some new theorems in a much more general setting.  We will see in particular that an abstract group homomorphism from a completely metrizable group to any one of a large collection of classical groups will have open kernel.  Historical background, sharpness and proof outlines will be presented.
