Postdoc researcher and PhD student positions in Astroparticle Physics
The Department of Astroparticle Physics invites applications for one Postdoctoral research position and one PhD position to start at the beginning of 2024.
The main objective of the work of the successful candidates will be the determination of the mass composition of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) with reduced systematic uncertainties from the description of hadronic interactions using the data of the Pierre Auger Observatory and its upgrade AugerPrime. The objective includes an assessment of the feasibility of event-by-event determination of the mass of primary particles and the mass composition-enhanced studies of arrival directions of UHECRs using the data from the surface detector of AugerPrime. In this regard, studies of the properties of a muonic component of extensive air showers constitute an essential part of the work.
What you will do:
- Participate in the work of the largest cosmic-ray observatory.
- Work in a team of experienced experimental physicists, including three coordinators of the Pierre Auger Observatory tasks
- Develop data-analysis techniques
- Improve or develop new air-shower reconstruction methods
- Produce air-shower simulation libraries using farm and grid computing
- Present results within the Pierre Auger Collaboration and at international conferences
- Publish your research in refereed journals
Required qualifications:
- Master's degree for the PhD position / PhD degree for the postdoctoral position in (astro)particle physics or astrophysics
- Experience with data analysis in experimental (astro)particle physics
- Proficiency in programming and computing (C++, python, bash, ROOT)
- Experience with Monte Carlo simulations using farm and grid resources is an advantage
- Good skills in machine learning techniques are an advantage
- Creative thinking and proactive problem-solving
- Good knowledge of English (written and spoken)

Terms of employment - Postdoctoral researcher:
- Start of employment beginning of 2024
- Full-time (40 hours/week)
- 3-year contract PhD student:
- Start of employment beginning of 2024 or according to the availability of a successful candidate
- Half-time (20 hours/week)
- 4-year contract
