Join the Scientific & Quantum Computing team at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, one of Europe’s leading synchrotron and free-electron laser research facilities. Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is an international research infrastructure located in Trieste, Italy, near the Slovenian border.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Quantum Computing to join the Scientific and Quantum Computing team (SciQC – quantum.elettra.eu).

The successful candidate will participate in a regional QC project focused on advancing neutral-atom quantum computing and simulation platforms. This is a unique opportunity to work on a cutting-edge quantum computing initiative while contributing to the facility’s scientific computing and data-analysis activities.

Main activities

Design and development of quantum algorithms
Performance evaluation and benchmarking on experimental quantum hardware and high-performance classical simulations
Research at the interface of quantum theory, numerical methods, and large-scale scientific data analysis
Contributions to scientific computing activities supporting facility operations

Required qualifications

PhD in Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (completed by the time of hiring)
Experience with computational methods for data analysis
Knowledge of quantum computing theory and algorithms
Practical experience with QC frameworks (e.g., Qiskit)
Software development experience in Linux environments

Nice to have

Experience with QC SDKs (Qiskit, PennyLane, Cirq)
Familiarity with QC algorithms (e.g., QAOA, VQE, Grover)
Experience in research environments and peer-reviewed publications

Contract: 18-month fixed-term employment, salary commensurate with experience.
