Abstract: The aim of  this talk is to give a general view of the more recent works on non-compact discrete Morse theory carried out by my collaborators and myself. In particular, we have been working on the extension to this setting of Morse inequalities, the notion of optimality, the study of the existence of discrete Morse functions with no critical simplices and finally, we have established links between the critical elements of a proper discrete Morse function and the topology of its domain.
