Content (Syllabus outline)

The motivation for working with databases and basic concepts: database, data independence, database and file system, relational databases.
Database software tools with a focus on systems for managing databases (SUPB).
SQL. SELECT. Restrictions, grouping of tables (JOIN).
The essentials of databases planning. ER diagrams.
CREATE TABLE, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE.
Programmatic access to databases.

Readings

  2. R. Ramakrishnan, J. Gehrke: Database management systems, 3rd ed., Boston : McGraw-Hill, cop. 2003.
Objectives and competences

Students will be acquainted with basic definitions of data and information, the organization of the logical and physical databases, as well as with basics of data models. They will gain knowledge in query languages such as SQL and learn to use them in practice. They will also study the functioning of certain systems for managing databases.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:
Comprehensive knowledge of databases and practical work with them. The integration of applications and databases.
Application:
The use of databases in information systems and in other areas of computer science and information technology.
Reflection:
Introduction and comprehension of interactions between theoretical principles (especially those of relational data model) and their practical use in modern databases.
Transferable skills:
Practical knowledge of databases increases the student's abilities for data organization during the study and at future work.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, usage of distance learning techniques, home works, consultations

Assessment

Written exam
Oral exam – presentation of the project
Students receive two grades: one from the written exam and the other from the project and the oral exam.
grading: 5 (fail), 6-10 (pass) (according to the Statute of UL)
