Prerequisites

Enrollement in the 3rd year, passed course of Quantum Mechanics I.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Nucleus, static properties: mass, dimension, angular momentum, magnetic moment. Nuclear structure.  and  decays, nuclear fission.

Interactions and fields, coupling constants, dependence on energy.

Conservation laws and symmetries, relation between symmetry of Hamiltonian and conservation laws.

Quark model of hadrons, wave functions of elementary hadrons, multiplets.

Particle current densitiy from Schroedinger and Klein-Gordon equation; 4-vectors, natural units. Dirac equation, Pauli and Diarc matrices. solutions of Dirac equation, bispinors.

Electromagnetic interaction, lepton scattering.

Weak interaction, b decay, pion and muon decay. Parity and charge conjugation violation, CP violation. CKM matrix. Neutral weak interaction.

Electroweak interaction.

Neutrinos: mixing and masses.

Particle physics and cosmology.

Objectives and competences

Goals: Student gets acquainted with basic laws of nuclear and particle physics.
Acquired competence: Knowledge of basic properties of nuclei and nuclear structure. Capability of elementary problem solving in nuclear and particle physics, and relating theoretical predictions and measurement results. Critical evaluation of results in nuclear and particle physics.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:
Basic knowledge nuclear and particle physics. Knowledge and understanding of the elementary particle interactions. Capability of relating the theory predictions and measurements.

Application:
Understanding of various particle interactions and their interrelation. Relation of basic laws of particle physics and macroscopic physics phenomena. Usage of basic laws in determination of particle properties and properties of processes in the subatomic world.

Reflection:
Critical evaluation of theoretical predictions using results of measurements. Quantum mechanical reasoning in classification of processes in subatomic world.

Transferable skills:
Relativistic quantum mechanical calculations.
Relation between particle properties and cosmology. Understanding of particle physics phenomena and measurement results explanation and evaluation.

Lectures, problem solving, selective expert excursion.

Assessment

2 tests on numerical exercises or a written examination
Oral or written theory examination.
