Prerequisites

Enrollment in the 3rd year of study.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Introduction: Maxwell equations, wave equation, polarization.
Refraction and reflection: Fresnel equations, total reflection, examples.
Scalar diffraction theory: Kicrhhoff diffraction integral, Fresnel and Fraunhofer approximations, fundamentals of Fourier optics, Gaussian beams.
Coherence theory: temporal coherence, Wiener-Kinchin theorem, spatial coherence, Van-Zittert-Zernike theorem.
Interferometry: Fabry-Perot, Michelson, Mach-Zender, Sagnac interferometers, multilayer films, optical resonators.
Interaction between light and matter: refractive index, Sellmayer formulas, propagation of light in anisotropic media, fundametnatls of nonlinear optics, optical amplification.
Laser basics.

Knowledge and understanding of fundamental laws of optics, optical phenomena, optical devices and their use. Understanding of consequences of laws of optics to natural phenomena and optical devices.

Application of optical phenomena in optical and optoelectronic devices.

Reduction of optical phenomena to fundamental optics laws.

Transferrable skills:
Use and application of Fourier analysis.
