Content (Syllabus outline)

Lessons will cover the following topics which will include examples from basic and modern physics:

  1. Some latest findings on how people learn and which major processes run in our brain during learning. Examples of typical difficulties that students and laymen have with understanding basic physics concepts.

  2. Oral presentation: basics, effective use of information technology, program tools and demo experiments. Typical problems and mistakes that novices make in giving oral presentations.

  3. Writing science and popular science literature. Typical structure of scientific paper. Impact factor and H index. Review process. Typical problems and mistakes that novices make in writing science and popular science papers.

  4. Organizing and performing activities for popularization of science (science shows, competitions, do-it-yourself projects and more).

Readings

Iskanje primernih virov je tudi del aktivnosti v okviru predmeta. Priporočene vire določi nosilec predmeta glede na izbrane primere./Literature search is also an assignment given to students in the course. Course leader will suggest additional literature depending on the examples used in the course.

Objectives and competences

Objectives
Students will learn

-how to prepare and present a scientific presentation and popular science presentation.
-how to write scientific and popular science paper.
-how to organize and run an activity for popularizing science (physics).

Competences
Ability to communicate science topics to different audiences

Intended learning outcomes

Acquired knowledge
Knowledge about basic types of communicating scientific ideas and concepts to general and professional public. Basic knowledge about underlying theoretical frameworks.

Application
Students will learn how to prepare and present a scientific presentation and popular science presentation, how to write scientific and popular science paper and how to organize and run an activity for popularizing science (physics).

Reflection
Awareness of typical difficulties and caveats in communication science to different audiences.

Transferable competencies – not limited on one subject only
Ability to communicate science topics with general (laymen) public. Effective use of ICT in communicating science topics.

Learning and teaching methods

Lessons, cooperative learning and peer instruction, active learning using guided inquiry, student seminars and project tasks.

Assessment

Single grade that combines achievements on tests, on projects and at recitations
grading: 5 (fail), 6-10 (pass) (according to the Statute of UL)
