Content (Syllabus outline)

Lecture content: A brief historical overview of the development of chemical science. Composition and structure of matter, pure substances and mixtures, separation of components from mixtures based on different physical properties of the components. Basic chemical laws and concepts. Chemical reactions, stoichiometric ratios and excess reactants. Heat in chemical reactions, internal energy and enthalpy, Hess's law. Structure of the atom, basic characteristics of the Bohr and quantum mechanical models of the atom, orbitals, electronic configuration and the periodic table of elements. Types of chemical bonds, basics of valence bond theory, Lewis structures, basics of molecular orbital theory, molecular bonds. States of matter, structure of solids. Gas-phase chemical equilibrium. Basics of interface chemistry – adsorption (qualitative). Liquids, solutions, colligative properties, electrolyte solutions, electrolytic dissociation, Arrhenius and Brønsted-Lowry theories of acids and bases, ionisation equilibria in aqueous solutions, ionic reactions, solubility product, buffers. Chemical kinetics, effects on the rate of chemical reactions. Oxidation and reduction – redox reactions, electrochemical series, electrolysis. Overview of properties, uses, transformations and environmental aspects of important elements and compounds.

Laboratory practice: Basics of safe laboratory work; formulae of chemical compounds; gases and gas mixtures; preparation of solutions and measurement of density; acids, bases and salts; titration; oxidation and reduction reactions; ionisation equilibria in aqueous solutions.
