Content (Syllabus outline)

Quantum mechanics of atoms: symmetries, atomic models,orbitals, configurations, coupling schemes, bound and continuum states, practical calculations of atomic structure with self-consistent field models – SCF. Resonaces and decay channels, nonradiative decay (Auger spectroscopy, autoionization).

Interaction with photons: oscillator strengths (absorption spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy), lifetimes of excited states, emission transition probability, selection rules for photon emission (fluorescence spectroscopy), Inelastic photon scattering.

Interaction with electrons: elastic and inelastic electron scattering (energy loss spectroscopy – EELS), coincidence measurements: (e,2e) and (γ,2e).

Interaction with ions: ion beams, ion scattering on atoms, x-ray spectrometry and spectroscopy from ion trap.

Atom-atom interaction: atom-atom potential, scattering of atoms, production of atomic beams.

Simple molecular systems: symmetries, electronic states, photoelectron spectroscopy, photoabsorption, spectroscopy of occupied states – binding energies (XPS), near edge fine structure (XANES), vibrational and rotational structure, molecular dissociation (γ,e,ion) experiments.

Special topics: Rydberg atoms. Atoms in external fields: static magnetic and electric field, AC electric field. Multiphoton absorption.

Objectives and competences

Objectives:
Understanding of structure of isolated atoms and simple molecular systems in the field (free) environment and knowledge of their response upon excitation with photon, electron and other atoms (ions).

Competences:

Knowledge of modern experimental techniques and basic theoretical approaches in atomic and molecular physics. Ability to implement numerical algorithms for calculation of the atomic wave functions and of the other system properties.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:
Understanding of the basic atomic molecular structure and of their excitation and relaxation pathways in the field (free) environment. Knowledge about research and analitycal atomic spectroscopies.

Application:
The acquired knowledge allows for a solid understanding of the atomic and molecular structure and dynamics when these systems are interactiong with photons, atoms and charged particles (electrons and ions). This is the basis for more detailed studies of atomic relaxation, of manipulation techniques on a scal of a single atom and for spectroscopic techniques that are nowadays extremely important in the material analysis.

Reflection:
Use of the quantum mechanics to describe excitation and relaxation of correlated manybody systems.

Transferable skills:
The acquired knowledge about structure and dynamics of atoms and simple molecular systems in field (free) environment forms a basis for understanding of the more complex szstems such as macromolecules and the condensed matter.

Lectures, exercises, research workshop – work in the field.

2 midterm exams instead or final written exam
Oral exam
