Project description:
The central goal of UNLOCK is to advance kinetic theory to describe systems where extended objects play a crucial role, such as QCD strings in high energy collisions, superfluid vortices in neutron stars and in general systems that go beyond the dilute gas approximation. The project aims to extend kinetic theory into a regime where strings, vortices and other extended structures can be treated on the same footing as particles, opening the way to new insights in our understanding of transport, thermalization and phase transitions in strongly coupled systems, such as the quark–gluon plasma. To achieve this, UNLOCK will draw on recent developments in relativistic kinetic theory, field theory, higher‑form symmetries and stochastic hydrodynamics. As a direct application of the framework, the kinetic theory underlying relativistic magnetohydrodynamics will be constructed, directly capturing the microscopic dynamics of magnetic field lines.
