Completed course Introduction to physics.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Exercises:
Spring pendulum.
Momentum and collisions.
Rotation of rigid bodies, viscosity.
Static sound waves in aluminum rod.
Ideal gas law, adiabatic and isothermal compression and decompression of air.
Calorimetry: measurement of specific heats of metals.
Electrical circuits, electrical resistivity as a function of temperature.
Spherical capacitor.
Magnetic force on electrical current.
Interference of laser light, measurement of the refractive index of water, total internal reflection.
Geometrical optics.
Gamma-rays, Geiger-Müller tube, the half-value layer of lead.

Objectives and competences

In pairs, students perform laboratory exercises. They are introduced to the basic principles of measurement in physics and acuire knowledge about instruments for measuring physical quantities (force, pressure, temperature, velocity, acceleration,...), interfaces between the instruments and computers, data accuisition and its analysis.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:
Students develop skills that are necessary for independent performance of physics measurements. They are trained in applying the theory, discussed at Introduction to physics, for analysis of the measurement results.
Application:
Ability to make use of and to combine different pieces of measurement equipement.
Reflection:
Testing theory with appropriate experiments.
Transferable skills:
Basic skills in performing experiments and analyzing their outcomes by associating the experiment with theory. Ability to work on a project independently or in a small team.

Execution of laboratory exercises, keeping laboratory notebook
Test and oral exam
grading: 5 (fail), 6-10 (pass) (according to the Statute of UL)
