Enrollment in the 1st year
Enrolment in the doctoral study programme is open to candidates who have completed:
- a 2nd-cycle study programme;
- a programme leading to an academic higher education qualification, adopted before 11 June 2004;
- a study programme leading to a specialisation following a completed professional higher education programme. Additional study requirements for individual courses or modules totalling 30 to 60 ECTS credits will be set for candidates by the Study Committee of the Department of Mathematics or Department of Physics, respectively;
- a study programme leading to professions regulated by EU directives, or another integrated master’s degree programme evaluated at 300 ECTS credits;
- a study programme leading to a master of science degree or specialisation, if the candidate has previously completed a programme leading to an academic higher education qualification. Course units totalling 60 ECTS credits are recognised for candidates based on their application, as provided by law.
Enrolment in the doctoral programme in Mathematics and Physics is also open to graduates of foreign universities. The equivalence of previously acquired education in a foreign country will be established by means of the procedure for the recognition of foreign qualifications for the purposes of further education in accordance with the Statutes of the University of Ljubljana.
Selection criteria in the event of restricted enrolment:
In the event of restricted enrolment, candidates will be selected based on:
- grade point average (15 %),
- grade of university diploma or master’s thesis (5 %),
- success in the selection exam (80 %), which comprises a written exam in the field of mathematics or physics. Candidates can substitute 40% of the written exam grade with a grade from prior scientific and professional work in the field of the study programme.
In accordance with the instructions in the joint part of the Call, enrolment candidates must apply on the eVŠ web portal (https://portal.evs.gov.si/prijava/). The foreign certificates of education which will be submitted via the eVŠ together with all the required evidence and supporting material will automatically undergo the process of recognition of foreign educational qualifications for the purpose of further education at the University of Ljubljana.
By the end of the application deadline at the latest, the candidate must reach an agreement with a higher education teacher or scientific researcher to serve as mentor/co-mentor, who must meet the conditions of the University of Ljubljana for serving as a mentor/co-mentor in doctoral studies. The candidate must submit a written consent (agreement) with respect to the mentorship/co-mentorship and a short conceptual plan of the research work by the end of the enrolment deadline at the latest.

FIRST APPLICATION DEADLINE – for citizens of the Republic of Slovenia, citizens of EU Member States, Slovenians without Slovenian citizenship and foreign non-EU citizens:
- Deadline for submission of applications to the Call for Enrolment (eVŠ web portal): 10 June 2024, 23:59 CEST.
- Deadline for submission of evidence of fulfilment of conditions for enrolment (attachments or relevant proof from the application for enrolment; candidates who will conclude a second-cycle programme at UL FMF will not need to submit a certificate of completion of studies and certificate of completion of study requirements): 20 June 2024, 23:59 CEST, submitted on the eVŠ web portal.
SECOND APPLICATION DEADLINE – for citizens of the Republic of Slovenia, citizens of EU Member States, Slovenians without Slovenian citizenship and foreign non-EU citizens:
- Deadline for submission of applications for enrolment in possible available places that will not yet be filled in the first deadline (eVŠ web portal): 1 August 2024 - 1 September 2024, 23:59 CEST.
- Deadline for submission of evidence of fulfilment of conditions for enrolment (attachments or relevant proof from the application for enrolment; candidates who will conclude a second-cycle programme at UL FMF will not need to submit a certificate of completion of studies and certificate of completion of study requirements): 15 September 2024, 23:59 CEST, submitted on the eVŠ web portal.
THIRD APPLICATION DEADLINE – for citizens of the Republic of Slovenia, citizens of EU Member States and Slovenians without Slovenian citizenship:
- Deadline for submission of applications for enrolment in possible available places that will not yet be filled after the second deadline (eVŠ web portal): 19 September 2024 - 20 September 2024, 23:59 CEST.
- Deadline for submission of evidence of fulfilment of conditions for enrolment (attachments or relevant proof from the application for enrolment; candidates who will conclude a second-cycle programme at UL FMF will not need to submit a certificate of completion of studies and certificate of completion of study requirements): 20 September 2024, 23:59 CEST, submitted on the eVŠ web portal.
Candidates will be notified about the selection procedure and the enrolment procedure via e-mail or on the eVŠ web portal. The enrolment procedure will take place online, and will be completed by 30 September 2024 at the latest.
1. Degree certificate
It is not necessary to attach to candidates who have completed their studies at the UL FMF.
Scan or photograph of the original Diploma issued in the Republic of Slovenia (e. g. Diploma for
2nd cycle master`s study program) or Certificate on the completion of studies (graduation) from the Higher Education Institution (if the Diploma has not been issued yet).
2. Diploma supplement
It is not necessary to attach to candidates who have completed their studies at the UL FMF.
Scan or photograph of the original Diploma supplement or Transcript of records (which includes a list of all courses, credit points, grades, average grade, grade of thesis defense, etc.).
3. Certificate(s)
Scan or photograph of the original certificate(s) or the duplicate of the final certificate(s) representing general requirement for access to higher education.
4. Translation of the certificate(s)
Scan or photograph of a court-certified translation of the original Diploma into Slovenian, if the original Diploma is not issued in English, Croatian, Serbian (Latin), Bosnian (Latin), Montenegrin (Latin) or Macedonian (Latin).

5. Certificate(s)
Scan or photograph of the original Diploma, representing general requirement for access to higher education (e. g. Diploma for 2nd cycle master`s study program or Certificate on the completion of studies (graduation) from the Higher Education Institution, if the Diploma has not been issued yet).
6. Translation of the certificate(s)
Scan or photograph of a court-certified translation of the original Diploma or Certificate on the completion of studies (graduation) from the Higher Education Institution into Slovenian, if mentioned documents are not issued in English, Croatian, Serbian (Latin), Bosnian (Latin), Montenegrin (Latin) or Macedonian (Latin).

9. CV
It is not necessary to attach to candidates who have completed their studies at the UL FMF.
Scan or photograph of a short Curriculum Vitae (maximum one page) with a handwritten candidate`s signature.
10. Identity document of the candidate based on the written consent
Candidates who are not citizens of the Republic of Slovenia and are citizens of an EU Member State enclose an identity card or passport (page with personal data of the candidate, which should show the name, surname, date and place of birth and citizenship); citizens from a non-EU country enclose a passport (page with the personal data of the candidate, showing the name, surname, date and place of birth and citizenship). By enclosing this document, you agree that the higher education institution can use it for the purpose of enrolment procedures and must delete it after the completion of these procedures.
Only the necessary identification data should be visible on the sent document. Hide the data that are not required for identification (eg ID, signature, and photograph) with a photo processing program (eg Painter, Power Point, any other program or application on your smartphone) and make scan with a watermark that clearly states that it is a copy and for what purpose it is used.
- Consent on the mentor:
Scan or photograph of a written consent that clearly shows the choice and the consent of the mentor (for example, e-mail correspondence).

Admitted candidates will receive by e-mail along with a notice of the enrollment process a form which has to be completed and signed by the mentor and which is required to be submitted no later than enrollment. Candidates must also submit a short conceptual design of the research work.
2. Short chronological description of the entire education:
Scan or photograph of a short chronological description of the entire education (maximum one page) with a handwritten candidate's signature.
3. Recommendation letters:
Obligatory for subprogramme Mathematics only:
Scan or photograph of recommendation letters of two professors.
4. Other evidence
The candidate can attach, for example:
- evidence of previous research and expert work in the field of the study program,
- awards.
5. Application for the status of candidate with special needs and/or with special status:
