   Multiphoton processes at short wavelengths

dr. Andrej Mihelič, Institut "Jožef Stefan", Ljubljana

One of the ways of studying basic atomic properties is to expose an atom to external electric or magnetic fields and measure the atom's response. Of particular interest in the last years have been processes where two or several photons are absorbed and which are induced by short intense short-wavelength pulses, such as the pulses from the free electron laser (FEL) or high-order harmonic generation sources, or by pulses from spatially overlapping synchronised FEL (or synchrotron) and infrared laser sources (pump-probe experiments). I will present examples of my work and the work I was involved in during the recent years. I will talk about the interpretation of the data from the experiments performed at FLASH (the FEL in Hamburg) on multiphoton excitation and ionisation of noble gas atoms and about calculations and measurements of photoelectron angular distributions from light-polarised atoms performed at the Trieste synchrotron light source Elettra.
