Inertia-Gravity Waves in a Laboratory Experiment

Dr. Paul Williams*, Department of Meteorology, University of Reading, UK

Inertia-gravity waves play a crucial role in determining the general circulation of the atmosphere and ocean.  However, our knowledge of how inertia-gravity waves are generated and how they interact with the large-scale flow is incomplete. This seminar will describe the results of laboratory experiments in which inertia-gravity waves are studied.  The experiments provide an alternative to numerical models for investigating the waves. In particular, we will learn about how the waves are generated, what their properties are, and how they affect the large-scale flow.
