A new frontier in accelerators: the European Spallation Source
Prof. Steve Peggs, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY and European Spallation Source, Lund, Sweden
When it begins operation in 2019, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will use a superconducting linac to accelerate protons to 2.5 GeV, with a beam power of 5 MW, well beyond todays state-of-the-art. The proton beam strikes a rotating tungsten target wheel that is cooled by flowing helium gas, generating "fast" neutrons which are then cooled to room (or cryogenic) temperatures, before they are channeled down neutron guides to 22 experimental "instruments". One of the interesting options of the facility is an intense neutrino beam that could be used for long baseline experiments. This talk presents the ESS facility, concentrating on accelerator features and issues.
