The molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a quasi two-dimensional solid material composed of S-Mo-S sandwiches which are weakly coupled with van der Waals forces only. Therefore it is used as lubricant already for decades. Since discovery of different curved morphologies of this compound, like coaxial nanotubes, “mama”-tubes with encapsulated nano-onions, or size selective and electrically conductive nanotubes, these structures are compared with much more popular carbon nanotubes. In the same light, a graphene analogy, i.e. MoS2 monolayers were (re)discovered, but they show a bandgap, which is superior to graphene for field effect transistor (FET) application.
I will present a chronological development of our knowledge in synthesis and structure of MoS2 nanotubes, their exfoliation products and transforming into Mo-blue. The results of standard tribology testing of these technologically important materials will be compared with data of friction measurements performed on single MoS2 nanotubes using lateral force microscopy in ultra-high vacuum. The first polymer composites based on MoS2 nanotubes will be shown, and the first FET based on thin MoS2 nanoflake will be compared with monolayer analogy.
It is appropriate time that I present shortly also our measurement of pollution of air by nanoparticles released during use of pyrotechniques, like fireworks and sparklers.
