Tests of Lepton Flavor Phenomena and Implications for Beyond the Standard Model Physics

Recent measurements of the Higgs boson properties at the Large Hadron Collider strongly support the minimal pattern of electroweak symmetry breaking via the Higgs mechanism of the Standard Model. The mechanism is the only source that endows leptons and quarks with different masses and thus breaks the symmetry between fermions of the three generations. In the realm of charged leptons the Standard Model predicts that separate leptonic flavors, Le, Lµ, Lτ, are conserved and that the gauge interactions of leptons are universal. The lepton flavor conservation and lepton flavor universality have been thoroughly tested experimentally. In the colloquium I will present recent experimental clues for large effects of lepton flavor non-universality (LFU violation) in decays of B mesons and lepton flavor violation (LFV) in decays of the Higgs boson. These »anomalous« observables will then be interpreted as signals of physics beyond the Standard Model.
