The active transport in cells is mediated by molecular motors, proteins that convert the chemical energy to the mechanical work of the translational movement. One of such motors is dynein, responsible for generating the force required to drive movement of cilia and flagella and for intracellular transport in which cargo such as mRNA, receptor proteins, mitochondria and several vesicles are transported from the cell periphery towards its nucleus. The malfunction of dynein leads to several neurodegenerative diseases, respiratory diseases, deafness... In this talk I will present a mechano-chemical model which we have developed for the stepping of cytoplasmic dynein. The results of our model reproduce dynein's motile properties known from the experiments and propose some relations between the mechanical and kinetic properties of this motor and its stepping performance.
