Turbulence near absolute zero
Prof. Joseph J. Niemela, Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics and University of Trieste, Italy
Turbulence is widespread, indeed almost the rule, in the flow of fluids. It is a complex non-linear phenomenon, for which the development of a satisfactory theoretical framework remains incomplete, but which is crucial to our understanding of many natural phenomena and a wide range of technological applications. For this reason, experiments as well as direct numerical simulations of the equations of motion, have been fundamental to making progress. The talk will provide an overview of experimental efforts to take advantage of the unique properties of low temperature helium, and their extension to the study of turbulence in the superfluid phase, where the circulation is subject to severe quantum restrictions.
