The proton is the simplest atomic nucleus, yet only by using an appropriate probe --- high-energy electron beams --- does it reveal its fundamental properties.  We will discuss the spatial distribution of the proton's charge and magnetization, in particular in light of the recent "proton radius puzzle", its electromagnetic polarizabilities and resonance parameters, the way the proton behaves in the mirror world, as well as its axial structure and spin.
