Optical observations of Gamma Ray Bursts
Dr. Andreja Gomboc, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, University of Ljubljana
Gamma Ray Bursts are unpredictable and bright flashes of gamma rays, which occur about once a day in random directions in the sky and signal an explosive death of a star in a distant galaxy. Nowadays, their rapidly fading optical afterglows are routinely observed by purpose built robotic telescopes, including 2-m Liverpool Telescope, and their host galaxies are studied in detail with world's largest telescopes. I will review our group's recent results which shed light on properties of relatively nearby bursts, origin of early optical emission, and one of the key questions: what is the role of the magnetic field in these explosions?
