When is a group smarter than an individual? This turns out to depend on the interactions within the group to the point that a group can actually become stupider than an individual. So how the optimal conditions that maximize the collective intelligence can be achieved and put to a good use? In particular, what are the potentials of crowdsourcing - an emerging social phenomenon assisted by social media - to collectively solve problems and generate ideas or solutions? Upon going over several interesting examples of crowdsourcing usage in modern science, we will present our own contributions to the field.
