Inorganic nanotubes and nanowires: from discovery to applications
Maja Remškar

Two decades ago the first MoS2 and WS2 nanotubes have been synthesized at the Jožef Stefan Institute. Different unique nanomaterials have been prepared like nanobuds, nanopods, also called »mama«-tubes, size-controlled nanotubes, and Mo-based and W-based nanowires. The nanotubes already found very promissing applications in tribology as low-friction and low-wear additives and in nanoelectronics, in particular in the field-effect transistors. Growth mechanisms and crystal structure of different morphologies will be shown. A path from discovery of a new material, protection of intellectual property, establishing a company, and searching for applications will be described.
