Brendan Owens: Unlinking numbers of classical links

The unlinking number of a link in the 3-sphere is the number of crossing changes required to convert it to the unlink. I will discuss various approaches to computing this invariant, including recent work with Matthias Nagel using smooth 4-manifold topology.
