Gravitational waves from a dream to discovery

Gravitational waves naturally follow from Einstein's theory of gravity, yet their existence long remained controversial, since astronomy knew of no object that could produce detectable gravitational wave effects. The discovery of pulsars and the work of Weber renewed the interest in gravitational waves and spurred theoretical searches for possible sources. The history of this search and subsequent development of ideas to design gravitational wave detectors will be discussed. Finally, the detection of gravitational waves from the collapse of two black holes will be put in perspective of black hole physics.
