Nanoparticle coatings – the structures that protect or destroy the cell

Dr. Janez Štrancar, Laboratory of biophysics, Jozef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana

Any exposure of the human body to nanoparticles unavoidably leads to nanoparticles uptake and subsequent interactions with cells. With increasing types and forms of nanomaterials, also the number of conflicting results about nanoparticle toxicity have increased in the last years revealing that the mechanisms of nanotoxicity is far from being understood.

I will show how TiO2 nanoparticles can be coated either by the plasma proteins, which temporarily protect a cell membrane, or by the lipids, which on the other hand wrap around the nanoparticles leading to a bilayer disintegration without protein interference, a phenomenon which was encountered but never explained in living cells.
