Processes in which nucleons are promoted to their excited states (resonances) by real or virtual photons enable the most precise and model-independent study of nucleon structure and dynamics. Basic concepts of nucleon resonance physics will be introduced, focusing the discussion on two justly famous resonances, the Delta and the Roper.
